DulcoLax^® Tablets

DulcoLax^® Tablets are a well-tolerated laxative with a predictable onset of action.
When taken in the evening, the tablets work overnight to provide relief the next morning (after approx. 6–12 hours).

In cases of constipation, DulcoLax^® Tablets can be used by adults, children from 2 years of age, as well as pregnant and breastfeeding women.
In children, DulcoLax^® Tablets should only be used on medical advice.
Use during pregnancy is possible after consulting a doctor.

DulcoLax^® Tablets can also be used long-term after consulting a doctor.
Even with prolonged use as directed, no loss of effectiveness, habituation effects, or disturbances in electrolyte balance are to be expected¹.
The goal of use should always be a soft, well-formed stool.

The laxative tablets are suitable for adults and children from the age of 2 years.
It has been shown that neither the active ingredient nor its breakdown products pass into breast milk². Therefore, DulcoLax^® Tablets are also suitable for breastfeeding women.
In children, DulcoLax^® Tablets should only be used on medical advice.
Use during pregnancy is possible after consulting a doctor.

The recommended dose for adults and children aged 10 years and older is 1 to 2 tablets per day.

It is recommended to start treatment with the lowest dose (1 tablet). If necessary, the dose can be increased to 2 tablets to promote regular bowel movements.
The goal of use should always be a soft, well-formed stool.

Children under 10 years should not take more than 1 dragee daily.

A doctor should be consulted before use in children.

The tablets are best swallowed whole in the evening, so that the desired effect occurs the next morning (depending on the person, this takes about 6 to 12 hours).

The laxative tablets should not be taken at the same time as foods or preparations that reduce the acidity of the upper gastrointestinal tract.
This includes milk, antacids, or proton pump inhibitors.

DulcoLax^® Tabletsshould not be taken if you are allergic to the active ingredient bisacodyl or any of the other ingredients.

If you suffer from sugar intolerance, you should consult your doctor before taking them, as the tablets contain small amounts of lactose and sucrose.

You should also avoid taking DulcoLax^® Tablets if you:

• • are severely dehydrated
  • suffer from intestinal obstruction (ileus)

• have a serious abdominal condition, such as appendicitis
• experience severe abdominal pain with nausea and vomiting

DulcoLax^® products, and any other laxatives, do not help with weight loss. They don’t reduce the absorption of calories or nutrients. They can cause watery stools (diarrhoea), abdominal cramps and dehydration.

There are several types of laxatives – each works differently to help you poo.

Stimulant laxatives
Stimulant laxatives including bisacodyl, the active substance in Dulcolax Suppositories, have a dual action. They transport water and salt into the gut which hydrates the poo and makes it easier to pass. In addition, they stimulate the activity of bowel muscles, causing your intestines to contract. Together, these two effects accelerate the transit of poo through the colon. Effectively, stimulating your bowel muscles helps get things moving.

Stool softener laxatives
Stool softeners are just that — products that help make hard, dry, painful poo softer. They work by softening the poo in the intestine, which makes it easier and more comfortable to pass. When used as directed, stool softeners are a gentle way to keep things moving.

Suppositories
Medicated suppositories are a typically reliable, fast-acting dosage form of stimulant laxative that are inserted into the rectum. These suppositories, which may contain bisacodyl or glycerin, help move the poo out of the body by providing lubrication and stimulation. They stimulate the bowel muscles in the intestine to help encourage a bowel movement within minutes.

Fibre supplements
Fibre supplements add bulk to your poo. Bulky poos are softer and easier to pass.

Osmotic laxatives
Osmotic or saline laxatives help poo move through the large intestine by drawing water from the rest of the body and into your bowel. This hydrates the poo and make it easier to pass. Saline laxatives can also help keep you regular.

Some people who suffer from constipation symptoms need to take laxatives continuously in order to maintain comfortable bowel movements.
People with chronic constipation are unable to have regular bowel movements without discomfort, such as severe straining. However, this ongoing use is not the result of previous laxative use. Rather, it is their condition that makes continuous use necessary, and this should not be misunderstood as addiction.

Laxatives do not have addictive potential³ ⁴.
